Vosne - Les Malconsorts 1990 Thomas-Moillard

9/95. Acquired from Nuits-St. Georges Dec-95 for $25 (imported for $36 net).
As I recently acquired three more bottles of this wine (alas at much higher price) I decided to try my first(!) 1990 (B). This is probably the flagship wine of Moillard's own domaine.
COLOR: Very impressive dark violet red. Much more like a good CAB than a typical (B).
NOSE: Oh, Ah, Oy..... The perfect 'Bourgogne nose'! Subtle, delicate, enticing. I was reluctant to taste the wine lest the taste fall short of the unbelievable aroma. Very pronounced fruit, though not the Beaune-like cherry stuff. More profound and deep. Discernable layers of marzipan(!), oriental spices, and more. One of the best (B)-nose I remember.
TASTE: I was afraid to commit infanticide by drinking such a young 1er Cru. Not so! The taste fulfill every promise of the nose and more. A very 'winy' yet delicate wine. Nothing harsh or thin or hollow. The wine is far from being fully mature, but is *very* enjoyable now. The fruit, the spices, and the 'fullness' of the vintage are all apparent on the palate. Over and above everything else - a delicious and extremely tasty nectar.
LENGTH: Very long aftertaste, just continues the delicious finish long after there is nothing in the mouth.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium body. Perfect balance mislead to think this 13.5% alcohol bugger is a light wine. Fruit, wood, alcohol, acidity and very soft tannins all combine to prompt the feel of a wholesome wine that will give pleasure for many years to come.
OVERALL: A superb wine that is equal or better than many Grand Crus. At the ridiculous price I paid for this bottle this must be one of the best value red (B) there are. Even the higher price I paid for the other three bottles is very reasonable regarding the quality. Still vibrant and young, but a pleasure to drink now anyway. I plan to drink my remaining bottles at about eight months interval.
MARK: 18+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
