Echezeaux 1983 DRC
11/95. Acquired from London Aug-95 for $94 (imported for $104 net).
Tonight, for our 23rd anniversary at a restaurant with friends.
COLOR: A bit darker ruby-red than might be expected from a 12-yrs (B). Not
much paling towards the rim (though the poor lighting in the restaurant
prevented accurate assessment).
NOSE: The most beautiful and concentrated sweet nose of a mature great (B).
Game and leather tones, though not much fruit. Even the last drops in the
glass yielded plenty of pleasurable aroma.
TASTE: Excellent and complex taste. Very smooth on the palate, though maybe a
tiny bit lack of fruit and concentration.
LENGTH: Shorter than I expected. Very nice, if a bit acidic, aftertaste though.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium body, tannins still abound. Good structure but not
enough 'flesh' to counter the noticeable acidity.
OVERALL: Very good wine no doubt, but I must admit I expected more. Cannot
compare with some of the the other '83 Grand Crus I had recently. Certainly
not on the level of Mongeard-Mugneret 'Grands Echezeaux' or Roumier 'Bonnes
Mares' (Maybe even not with Faiveley 'Mazis Chambertin' at half the price).
MARK: 16/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? No.
