Yesterday night with another fanatic friend, we set from 1-am till 5-am
(Israel time) to watch the Super Bowl live.
As a tribute to the occasion, I thought it would be appropriate to have some
American wines along with the melange of nuts, almonds, pretzels, cheese,
chocolate, salmon caviar and smoked salmon that saw us through the long night.
Dorit stayed with us for the first half hour or so, then mumbled something
about how madmen of the world are united and went to sleep. These were the
wines:
Chardonnay - (Central Cost) 1993 Wente Bros.
Costs here $13.
Even as a casual quaffer for watching the Super Bowl, this
wine was pretty disappointing.
Very slight nose, more petrol than fruit. Not
particularly tasteful, though not undrinkable. The only good point as far as
I'm concerned, is that unlike most Cal Chard I have tasted, this wine was
quite dry, not the sickening tropical-fruit cocktail type.
MARK: 14/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? No.
Pinot Noir 1991 Domaine Drouhin
Courtesy of Bruce Douglas.
A VERY pleasant surprise!
Medium-dark red, hardly
any clearing around the rim. Good, unmistakable, PN nose. Though no particular
fruit shows itself, the overall aroma and bouquet is very pleasing indeed. The
wine is pretty tasty too! Though a bit rough, the excellent balance between
alcohol, acidity, fruit, fading tannins and a touch of game-meat sweetness -
made me go for the bottle again and again.
I liked this '91 bottle better than the '89 and '92 I have tasted.
MARK: 16+/20.
