Ch. Lafite Rothschild 1978 Pauillac
6/96. Acquired in auction Sep-95 for $100 (imported from Chicago for $112
net).
My first Chateau Lafite! Friday night dinner for two: Oeuf bourguignon,
entrecote with baked potatoes, cheese, creme caramel.
COLOR: Deep dark red. Hardly any clearing towards the rim.
NOSE: Very strong bouquet of blackcurrents and violets. Engulfed by the
right dose of the typical 'Bordeaux Nose' of tar, pencil-tip, tobacco,
whatchamacalit... Really enticing.
TASTE: Quite a good amount of sweetish fruit, amidst discernible tannins.
Very tasty and elegant on the palate, though I guess there are more
concentrated Lafites. Very enjoyable and good accompaniment to all the
dishes we had.
LENGTH: Extremely long and interesting aftertaste that starts with the
bitter touch of the tannins, then transforms into a (pleasant) sourish
reverberating never-ending echo.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium bodied, and well balanced. A bit too strong
tannins for the fruit and could have a bit more 'punch'. Other than that -
a great wine.
OVERALL: Superb. Reveals its class by the first sip. I am now anxious to
try a real top-vintage Lafite...
MARK: 18/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Maybe.
