Syrah 1994 Babcock Vineyards
1/97. Received from forumite Bertram Silk on his recent visit to Israel.
To accompany me and another crazy friend staying up all night to watch the
Super Bowl live (1am-5am our time), I decided to open this wine of which I
knew absolutely nothing.
COLOR: Pretty dark and opaque, tinted towards violet.
NOSE: Excellent! very concentrated sweet nose, hinting at its Rhone cousins
but not really all that spicy and complex. Abundant black forest fruit. A
bit jammy but enticing and very interesting.
TASTE: Similar sweetness on the palate. Extremely tasty though still very
young. Flavors range from fruity jam to hints of pepper. Good acidity and
soft tannins add structure to this good wine.
LENGTH: Not particularly long aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: An "americanized" fruit-bomb syrah? Medium body with a
little too much fruit. Still, reasonably well balanced and pleasantly
different.
OVERALL: Excellent! Don't expect a Hermitage but a very tasty and
interesting wine. Will for sure improve in a couple of years.
MARK: 17+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
