Ch. Cheval Blanc 1978 St. Emilion

5/97. Acquired in auction Nov-95 for $80 (imported for $90 net).
My second and last bottle of this wine opened for Friday night BBQ dinner for two. The first bottle I tasted some 18 months ago and marked it 18/20.
COLOR: A bit fade out with some orange-brownish hues. Tons of sediment at the bottom.
NOSE: At first a bit funky, then turning into a nice mellow aroma. Nothing spectacular and not much fruit. Maybe even a bit tired. Still nice though.
TASTE: Again, very mellow and smooth on the palate. No great concentration and neither especially tasty. Nothing offending on the palate though, as breed and elegance still evident.
LENGTH: Moderately long and pleasant aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium weight. Weak fruit, tannins all gone, a bit to acidic.
OVERALL: Excellent (only!). I wonder what the same wine, made four years later (and currently selling for about $650 a bottle) must taste like to be so much hyped...
MARK: 17+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? No.
