31-August-97
A week of excellent and diverse wines. The following wines accompanied a dinner at
our home, a dinner at friends, and a dinner at a most amazing restaurant.
Meursault - Clos des Perrieres 1992 A. Grivault
8/97. As good and even better than any of the previous seven bottles of this wine
I've had in the past. Concentrated nose that have shed most of its previously oaky
mask. Buttery, fat texture. Mouthfilling viscous wine with lingering aftertaste.
Superb!
MARK: 18/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
CdP - Chateau de Beaucastel 1990 Perrin
8/97. Dark opaque color, spices and prunes on the nose, amazing multiple flavors,
still very tannic. Extremely tasty, complex and interesting. Incredible wine!
MARK: 18+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
Vosne - Cros Parantoux 1988 H. Jayer
8/97. Medium ruby red color. Profound and enticing nose. Immensely complex
'Bourgogne Nose', serving as background to gobs of red fruit. Multi-layered taste,
mouthfilling, fantastically balanced. Extremely long aftertaste. Grand Cru quality
though only 1er Cru by pedigree. An extraordinary wine by an extraordinary
winemaker.
MARK: 19/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
Ch. Margaux 1979 Margaux
8/97. Medium violet red with noticeable clearing around the rim. Very good nose
with some fruit and 'pencil tip' tones. Taste is a bit disappointing. Nothing bad
of course but lacks the profound concentration I would expect from Ch. Margaux.
MARK: 17+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
Brunello del Montalcino 1988 M. Fastelli
9/97. Fine color though a bit paling towards the rim. Good and forward nose,
mature fruit and soft flowery bouquet. Warm and tasty on the palate with the still
discernible tannins making this wine a perfect accompaniment for the myriad of meat
dishes that kept flowing in this fantastic 'game' restaurant. Excellent.
