It is a rare pleasure for me to spend an evening with new wine loving friends. A mutual friend organized a wonderful dinner at the best seafood restaurant in Jerusalem - the celebrated and creative Chef Eyal Shani's Oceanus (Ocean).
Ten wine lovers brought five different wines that were served along an excellent (though mighty expensive) degustation dinner.
Tartar of Jerusalem Artichoke
1986 Riesling 'Clos St. Hune', Trimbach
______
Shrimps 'hamburger' (an extraordinary creation!)
1990 Corton Charlemagne, Louis Latour
______
'Locus' carpaccio
1988 Ch. Petit Village
______
Couscous dumplings
1990 Ch. Lynch Bages
______
Grilled 'Farida'
1989 Barolo 'Zonchera', Ceretto
______
Assorted desserts
The food the wine and the company were all superb. I was especially delighted to "discover" some serious and pretty knowledgeable wine lovers. The whole evening was very successful and certainly worth the trip from Tel-Aviv.
Riesling 'Clos St. Hune' |
1986 |
Trimbach |
8/98. Medium straw color. Pretty complex and elegant nose, though lacking the usual 'petrol' tones. Perhaps a tad less enticing than other vintages I've had but still a noble wine with that special 'Clos St. Hune' appeal.
MARK: 17/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
Corton Charlemagne |
1990 |
L. Latour |
8/98. Deep golden yellow. Profound and very rich nose of white fruit and minerals. Mouthfilling with plenty of 'winyness' and crisp, steely feel. Immensely long aftertaste. Full bodied yet perfectly balanced.
MARK: 18.5/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
Ch. Petit Village |
1988 |
Pomerol |
8/98. Medium dark violet-red. Good nose of red forest fruit. Hard tannins and some hollowness on the mid-palate distract from an otherwise pretty lovely wine.
MARK: 16/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? No.
Ch. Lynch Bages |
1990 |
Pauillac |
8/98. Dark blood-red color, hardly any clearing around the rim. Very rich and enticing fruity nose. Mouthful of flavors with complex sweetness tones. Soft tannins, ripe fruit and good acidity. Very drinkable now but will improve for many years.
MARK: 18/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
Barolo 'Zonchera' |
1989 |
Ceretto |
8/98. Very dark but noticeable clearing towards the rim. Lovely nose of perfumed cherries. Perhaps not the most complex of wines, but extremely tasty with superb acidity and perfect balance.
MARK: 17/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
