Campaccio 1993 Terrabianca

11/98. Got this one as a present, but I think it sells for about $40-50.
A new wine for me. My ignorance about Italian wines is such that I know nothing about this wine except what I read on the label. It is from Toscana and was aged for a long period in small barrique. I am ashamed to admit I don't even know what grape(s) it is made of...
COLOR: Nice medium-dark red color. Very slight clearing around the rim and no sediment.
NOSE: Lovely aromas of black forest-fruit supported by mild vanilla and liquorice tones. Not an "awesome" nose, but stylish, distinctive and a pleasure to sniff at.
TASTE: Really wonderful! Fills the mouth with lively multi-flavor vinous elements. Not really resembling any wine I know. The closest thing I can think of is 'Beaucastel' though this one is a bit less deep and complex. The wine, which is still a bit tannic, easily supported a multi-flavored Chinese (takeaway) dinner. Smooth, neither too light nor too heavy, this wine is extremely tasty without losing its elegance.
LENGTH: Very long and exciting aftertaste that keeps developing in the mouth.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium-weight wine with enough breed and structure to support the use of oak. Excellent fruit, harmonious winyness, refreshing acidity with discernible though rounded tannins - all contribute to a perfectly balanced wine.
OVERALL: Superb-plus!! I don't know how this wine fares in 'formal' comparative tastings. But with food (I'd say any food) it simply marvelous.
MARK: 18.5/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
