Chambolle-Musigny 'Les Amoureuses' |
1993 |
R. Groffier |
8/99. Acquired from New York, Oct-96 for $50.
One of my favorite (B) wine. A 1er Cru that many times turns out better than the lesser Grand Cru of the Cote d'Or.
Over the years I have developed a lot of respect for Groffier. A domaine that is somewhat under-rated and have a strange ability to excel in off-years (Not that 1993 was an off-year in Burgundy).
COLOR: Beautiful dark and brooding color, almost un-(B)-like. Thin clearing around the rim
NOSE: Deep enticing bouquet with semi-ripe dark fruits amidst a wonderful robe of 'Bourgogne Nose' of raw meat, delicate leather, very light 'sous bois' tones and some wood elements.
TASTE: First and foremost - extremely tasty. Sweetish opulent fruit that is nicely concentrated but not excessively so. Elegant and very much in tune with the feminine 'terroir' of Chambolle-Musigny. Excellent winyness and very good grip. Not a huge wine in the mouth but very expressive, with fine acidity and soft tannins to make each sip a mouthful of balanced flavors.
LENGTH: Medium long aftertaste that is unbelievably tasty and focused.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium bodied, relatively complex wine with very fine texture. Stylish and elegant with fine backbone. Superbly balanced.
OVERALL: Superb-plus! Wonderful to drink now though will probably hold (and change) for years to come.
