Clos des Lambrays |
1990 |
Dom. Saier |
10/99. Acquired from Beaune, June-94 for $42.
One of the 'lesser' Grand Cru from Morey-St. Denis. This vineyard is a monopole that passed very few hands throughout its history.
COLOR: Medium-dark, uneven color. A bit fading.
NOSE: Fully developed nose of complex but coarse 'Bourgogne Nose'. Ripe fruit is there, together with earthy, animal and leather tones. It started really coarse, but smoothed out somewhat after 30 minutes or so.
TASTE: Tasted better than it smelled. Sweet mature fruit with pleasant winyness around it. Soft tannins and reasonable acidity. Not particularly delicate or majestic in its grip, but a nice enough wine to enjoy.
LENGTH: Nothing much here.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium-light body. A bit coarse and 'four-square' perhaps, but nicely balanced with pleasant fruit. Quite mature now and I doubt if will get any better.
OVERALL: Very-good-plus. Not really Grand Cru quality here, and I have tasted much better 1er Crus. But neither was its price way up in the sky...
MARK: 16.5/20. | BUY MORE? Maybe. |
