Rioja 1994 Remirez de Ganuza

11/99. Bought in Barcelona, Sep-99 for $40.
Another wonderful discovery on the top Spanish wines route. We opened this bottle to accompany a tasty mid-week dinner of Spanish air-cured Jamon, chicken soup with noodles, entrecote steak with chips.
According to the back label this wine is made of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano grapes from selected sites. The vines are 60 years old and wine spent 28 months(!) in barrique before being bottled.
COLOR: Medium dark ruby red. Slight clearing around the rim.
NOSE: Immense! Rich black fruit aromas. Vanilla chocolate and other oak elements are there but are far from overshadowing the enticing and complex bouquet. The powerful, deep but clean bitter-sweet nose is a real pleasure to sniff at.
TASTE: Very rich and concentrated, full of sweetish mouthfilling fruit. Deep and complex yet extremely tasty and winey. Fantastic grip by this hefty (14% alcohol) nectar with beautiful acidity and soft but noticeable tannins to balance the fruit flavors. Hard to imagine a better tasting wine!
LENGTH: Really long and reverberating aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Full bodied though not in the least heavy or hot. Thick textured, smooth, composed and elegant. Concentrated and sensual fruit. Superbly balanced with excellent acidity and round tannins.
OVERALL: Outstanding!! Wonderful wine, impeccable winemaking. Great now but will hold.
MARK: 19/20.BUY MORE? Yes.
