Blagny 'Le Piece sous le Bois' 1993 F. Jobard

6/2000. Bought at auction, Feb-00 for $45.
I am still suffering from the aftermath of the devastating attack my body underwent. My sugar levels are relatively balanced now, but two nasty infections [courtesy of staying at the hospital for two weeks] cause constant low fever and force me to take huge amount of antibiotics which doesn't help regaining my strength.
Anyway, a compromise I reached with my doctor allows me about two glasses of wine per week. So here goes:
A red wine from the Meursault area is a relatively rare animal. As a matter of fact no red wine can bear the name of Meursault. Blagny, a tiny hamlet on the south edge of Meursault is the appropriate appellation for a number of Premier Cru red wines. Curiously enough, there are no 1er Cru whites from Blagny although there is a white 'Village' Blagny (aren't Burgundy appellation rules simple and fun? LOL).
Francois Jobard is among the very best producers of (proper) Meursault, so I was curious to taste his red rendition.
COLOR: Light 'anemic' red brown, noticeable clearing around the rim.
NOSE: Distinct and very perfumed aroma of fresh red fruit with a soft 'Bourgogne Nose' as a backdrop. Not particularly deep or complex, but light, full of charm, and a pleasant to sniff at.
TASTE: Delicate, light and tasty. Not a simpleton and certainly not one-dimensional, this wine is all about charm and finesse. Very nice fruit, reasonable winyness, medium concentration, measured acidity and soft tannins. More like a mature red Chassagne-Montrachet (to the south) than like a sturdy Pommard (to the north).
LENGTH: Medium length aftertaste that well carries the fruit flavors.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Very light bodied wine. Though not lacking in structure, this wine is almost devoid of depth and punch. Fruit is prominent (more so on the nose than on the palate) and the wine is very well balanced in its low-keyed way.
OVERALL: Very good. If one is in the mood for a light-weight, subtle and tasty (B) than this wine is a distinct and stylish example.
MARK: 17/20.BUY MORE? Yes.
