Vosne-Romanee 'Beaux-Monts' 1991 D. Rion

2/01. Bought at his winery, Apr-96 for $30.
Patrice Rion is a modest but highly competent and conscientious winemaker. His domaine does not include a plethora of Grand Crus, but his 1er Crus (and even Village) wines are very well crafted and more than just dependable.
COLOR: Pretty dark ruby-red, some clearing around the rim.
NOSE: Profound aromas of fresh cherries and dry prunes, engulfed by a well defined 'Bourgogne Nose' together with soft touch of barnyard elements like wet forest-floor, mushrooms and raw meat. The nose is very expressive and a pleasure to sniff at.
TASTE: On the palate, this wine is fully developed and at its peak. Multi layers of both fresh and mature flavors. Plenty of fruit with excellent winyness. Soft but discernible tannins, measured acidity and fine backbone. Well focused with good grip and personality. A wholesome and tasty wine.
LENGTH: Medium-long somewhat sweetish aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium-full bodied wine. A touch rustic in its constitution though stylish and very well balanced. At its peak now.
OVERALL: A fine example of a 1er Cru Vosne-Romanee that is very expressive of its terroir. A great 'value' wine!
MARK: 17.5/20.BUY MORE? Yes.
