CdP - Barbe Rac 1995 Chapoutier

5/03. Acquired from France, Jun-01 for $58.
The more I drink the more I become an addict of top class Chateauneuf du Pape. This is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating appellations in France with a wide spectrum of varietals producers and quality. From the insipid to the divine.
We had this 100% Grenache top CdP cuvee with Friday night dinner at home: Delicious homemade crab cakes, tender stew with rice, melon in port.
COLOR: Deep purple color, hardly any clearing around the rim.
NOSE: Enticing nose of deep pronounced and brilliant black fruit. A touch of spice and chocolate but no dense oak. Marvelous and harmonious aromas. Wonderful!
TASTE: On the palate this wine is simply delicious. Multi flavored with accentuated fresh fruit. Plenty of winyness with good acidity and round soft tannins. Perhaps not the most complex of wines, but rich concentrated and a real pleasure to sip.
LENGTH: Medium-long and very tasty finish.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Full bodied wine that is well-endowed but never excessive. I was surprised at how ready this 8 years-old baby is. Fantastic fruit with nothing hidden or closed. No harsh tannins and perfectly balanced. It will surely hold for many years and will probably gain complexity. But the fresh fruit is so good now that I wouldn't wait for it to fade...
OVERALL: Superb! A fantastic wine from a not-so-special vintage.
MARK: 18.5/20.BUY MORE? Yes.
